Regarding the mods as art, I read this really interesting perspective by a mod artist, who I unfortunately can remember her name, that considered them a form of digital collage. They are reassembling media just like previous generations would paste together newspapers and magazines.

As a mod (which, uh, it is), Sarien.net was/is an interesting idea, because it’s massively-singleplayer play. So in that frame, it really is another sort of assemblage (or collage), if only because we don’t have a new word to fit the concept—collage is piecemeal space, and montage is piecemeal time, so a game modification is what?
